My practice is entirely virtual. I conduct interactive video sessions, usually 50-55 minutes long using a HIPAA-approved Zoom service. There is flexibility in case shorter or longer sessions are needed.
I was conducting video-based clinical hypnosis sessions for many years prior to COVID shutting everything down and making the entire health field think about other ways to deliver services. Hypnosis is not magic, and does not require me or anyone else to be in the same physical space with you to help initiate and maintain a hypnotic effect. Two primary components of hypnosis are suggestion and imagination, and these can be used and amplified in a variety of interpersonal spaces, including via video.
Since the onset of COVID, the ability for insurance- approved use of Telehealth has grown dramatically. Most insurance companies have been paying for Telehealth services. It is unknown at this point whether they will continue to do so into the future, but at present all the companies with which I have contracts are paying for Telehealth services. Check with your insurance for specific details about your insurance plan and contract. If you use or have used Telehealth services and find them useful, I recommend letting your insurance company know your thoughts.
I have been a provider of psychotherapy services post graduate school for 50 years. During that time I undertook training in a variety of therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), EMDR, Interpersonal therapies, Gestalt Therapy, and Family and Couples Therapy, and Clinical Hypnosis.
For many years (decades to be precise) the experiential foundation for practically all of my therapy is based on clinical hypnosis. There are differing viewpoints in the field about this matter, but I do not consider hypnosis to be a treatment in and of itself. Think of it as a vehicle that carries and delivers other forms of therapy such as CBT or EMDR more effectively due to the fact that it can involve more aspects of a person’s mind than does many other therapeutic approaches. I find that in most clinical situations clients are able to utilize hypnotic suggestions and hypnotic states to increase their comfort, self-exploration and the learning of new skills regardless of the theoretical and practical approach I am using.
